GLENKINCHIE 2005 (BOTTLED 2017) AMONTILLADO CASK WOOD 43% – DISTILLERS EDITION
Founded in 1825 in the outlying farmland around Edinburgh as Milton distillery (before being renamed in 1837), Glenkinchie languished in obscurity for over 150 years before becoming an international brand almost overnight at the end of the 1980s.
Glenkinchie is just fifteen miles from the capital, earning it the title “The Edinburgh Malt”. But it’s strange to think of that dark and distinguished city when you see fields of barley or the green Lammermuir Hills rolling north towards the Firth of Forth. Stranger still when you taste the subtle, floral flavour of this rare Lowland survivor.
Fragrant and firm-bodied, Glenkinchie is gently appetising on the palate. A fine aperitif, it keeps a smooth balance between sweet and dry.
To reveal the full depth and complexity of The DISTILLERS EDITION of GLENKINCHIE, the Master Distiller has hand-selected a small number of casks for double-maturing in Amontillado cask-wood, chosen to complement this delicate single malt’s light, sweet yet dry, floral style.
Intriguing nutty notes come from the wood itself and firmer, drier ones from malted barley and from echoes of the crisp grape once contained. Enormously malty on the palate, with a lingering, dry finish.
This special Limited Edition is hallmarked as a symbol of rarity and superior quality. The hallmark carries the symbol of the distillery, its founding year assay mark, the type of cask-wood in which the whisky has been double matured and the monogram of the master distiller.
Each bottle carries a release number, which designates the selected casks especially chosen for double maturation.
